Mud Creek hosts marital mayhem

We are cordially invited to a wedding in the quaint and quirky town of Faro, Texas – at least we hope there’s one.

Mud Creek Players presents “Dearly Beloved,” the popular comedy by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope, and Jamie Wooten, directed by MCP president Dani Lopez-Roque.

We await the blessed event in a church fellowship hall as the Futrelle sisters – Honey Raye (Lisa Warner Lowe), Frankie (Jennifer Poynter) and Twink (Lea Ellingwood) – must work together to make the wedding of Frankie’s daughter Tina Jo (Breanna Helms) as perfect as possible.

Estranged from her siblings, Honey is welcome to pitch in if she can stop flirting in her search for Husband No. 5. To Frankie’s horror, Twink’s idea of catering is a potluck supper, complete with hog roast in a pit behind the church. Frankie’s husband Dub (Jason Roll) and the bride’s twin sister Gina Jo (Helms) are also on hand to help, as well as friend Raynerd Chisum (Fred Margison) and wedding planner/florist Geneva Musgrave (Laura Gellin). Not wishing to help, or for the nuptials to even happen, is mother of the groom Patsy Price (Marie McNelis).

Unknown to the others, Twink has seen a fortune teller, Nelda Lou (Addie Taylor), who told her if she is to be married herself, she must attend a wedding with her boyfriend Wiley Hicks (Kevin Smith) – which is why her beau is there despite being severely sick, and on way too much cold medicine. Dub also has a secret, which he hopes to reveal later at the reception.

UPS driver Justin Waverly (Stephen Di Carlo) arrives delivering bad news: the minister can’t come to the wedding. However, as he is also a seminary student, Justin can officiate. This is followed by worse news: the bride and groom are headed out of town! Local police officer John Curtis Buntner (Jackson Hawkins) is dispatched to fetch them back.

From the opening scene at Geneva’s Bookoo Bokay all the way to the ceremony at the end, there are practically non-stop laughs, punctuated by all the feelings such a day can summon – love, rage, etc. Still, amongst the flurry of things going wrong, the important stuff goes right.

The entire cast get into their characters, bringing us into the fun. Lowe, Poynter, and Ellingwood exhibit sibling chemistry, both when sparks fly and when they join forces. Roll is sweet as the long-suffering dad and husband. Helms shows a knack for physical comedy, particularly when Gina Jo deals with her crush on Justin. Smith, playing a man who barely knows what planet he’s on, provides some of the wildest moments.

It feels appropriate to have a “barn” at the edge of the city host this charming and hilarious piece of small-town silliness with heart as big as Texas. Charming look at ‘Club’ all eventually join

Epilogue Players presents the lively comedy, “The Cemetery Club,” by Ivan Menchell, directed by Kelly Keller.

Once a month, Jewish widows Ida (Valerie Nowosielski), Lucille (Lisa Warner Lowe), and Doris (Marie McNelis) meet at Ida’s place and go to a cemetery in Forest Hills, Queens, to visit the graves of their husbands. When we meet them, it is the four-year anniversary of the passing of Doris’s husband, Abe, to whom she is as devoted as ever. Ida still loves her Murray, but is starting to feel she wants to do more than converse with a stone. Lucille is just glad her Harry is staying in one place.

Sam Katz (Tom Smith), the local butcher, comes by to visit the grave of his wife Myrna, and things get interesting.

With an upcoming social event – their friend Selma is getting married, again, and all are invited – the opportunity for dating, and maybe more, is in the air. Tom, feeling like a nervous teen, asks Ida out. Perpetual flirt Lucille appears jealous, while Doris is appalled at the whole situation. This results in hilarious situations reminiscent of “Sex and the City,” but older and more Jewish (and less sex). Mary DeBoer adds spice as Mildred, an additional wedding guest.

Aside from being very funny, the play also tugs at the heartstrings as we see friendships tested while they each in their own way continue to deal with loss and the need to “write a new chapter.” Nowosielski, Lowe, and McNelis have the chemistry of three ladies long comfortable with one another’s quirks. However, this familiarity leads to presumptions of what is best for one who is acting differently. Smith’s character is like a guy at any age who is caught up in a women’s world, trying seemingly in vain to do what is right.

‘Lost’ in Simon’s wartime family drama

You see a dozen shows by Neil Simon, you think you’d know what to expect – the farce of Rumors; or goofy relationships of The Odd Couple; or sweet (and a bit bitter) memories of Brighton Beach; or hilarious razor wit of Goodbye Girl.

For those unfamiliar with “Lost in Yonkers,” Simon’s 1990 Pulitzer-winning play presented by Main Street Productions in Westfield, note that many of his comedies’ hallmarks are present, but with a dark edge that is too real to completely laugh away. With the sharp rap of Grandma’s cane, wisecracks cease. The exaggerated aspects of characters come not in caricature but from coping with lifelong trauma.

In 1942 (America’s first full year in World War II) Eddie Kurnitz (Matt McKee) has to settle debts from his wife’s fatal battle with cancer, so takes a traveling job gathering scrap metal for the War effort. Thus he leaves his sons, 15 “and a half” Jay (Drake Lockwood) and 13 “and a half” Arty (Finley Eyers) with his mother in Yonkers (just outside New York City). Grandma Kurnitz (Lisa Warner Lowe), who escaped from Germany years ago to raise Eddie and his siblings in as strict and unsentimental a manner as possible to prepare them for what she sees as an unrelentless cruel world, is unpleased with his plan, but tolerates it at the request of Bella (Becca Bartley), her daughter whose ever-diverting mind stays in a childlike state.

Grandma owns and runs the candy store on the first floor of their building, which ironically becomes hell for the boys who find themselves penalized for every morsel that goes missing, whether it was their doing or not.

Meanwhile, Eddie’s brother Louie (Thom Johnson) shows up, with a wary eye out the window. He’s a bag man for shady characters who now want what he’s secreted in the bag. Gangsters being cool to teen boys, as well as the desire for cash to get his father out of debt and back home, Jay and Arty try to win his favor.

We also meet Aunt Gert (Maggie Meier), who has an unintentionally comical respiratory issue, when Bella gathers the family for what could be a momentous announcement if she can string the thoughts together.

Dark comedy derives a lot of chuckles from situational humor, and Simon serves that well here, but we are more drawn in by the layered drama of a family whose dysfunction runs deep, apt for one of the most stressful eras for any American. There is a method to the matriarch’s cruelty, and grudging admission of benefit, but it’s still difficult to justify. The damage is plain in every one of Grandma’s offspring, but especially Bella, as Bartley gives a brilliantly endearing and heartbreaking performance. Lowe, for her part, delivers both the cold exterior and fire within that keeps Grandma both feared and respected, with fleeting moments of wry German humor that keep us all off-balance. With Uncle Louie, Johnson maintains an air of Cagney-cool with just a touch of paranoia in knowing his gangland adventure ain’t a movie. Lockwood and Eyers keep the youths as smart-alecky and immature as you’d expect, but, as kids do, learning to adapt to their situation.
