Scotland comes to Garfield Park

Embracing the weird and macabre atmosphere of October, Garfield Shakespeare Company presents the tragedy of “Macbeth.”

In a convenient coincidence, just last month Southbank staged “Equivocation,” based on events around the 1606 premiere of William Shakespeare’s “Scottish Play,” presented to the Scottish King, James Stuart (James VI of Scotland, James I of England and Ireland). In a way, the present production works as a companion piece to the former.

However, this play stands well on its own, presented in full in its Medieval Highland setting, complete with an emphasis on its supernatural elements. Alongside the title character, his scheming wife, and various nobles, the stars of the show are the Weird Sisters – the Three Witches (played by Sydney Engelstein, Shawntae Buchanan, and Amalia Lynn Howard) with their leader/goddess Hecate (Zella Mae Elm). Their presence is felt throughout, even in scenes where they aren’t specifically referenced. Any of the Three may make herself a supporting character to move events along, including the mysterious “Third Murderer” that Shakespeare wrote into a pivotal scene. As a convenience, and upping the spooky factor, a Witch hexes away any unfortunate fallen character off the stage. Kudos to director Aaron Collins for these touches.

With the “hurly-burly” of a battle done, a rebellious Thane (Scottish noble similar to Earl) captured, and generals Macbeth (Christopher O’Hara) and Banquo (Chad Yadon) victorious, these two encounter the Witches. They greet Macbeth with titles including ones he doesn’t yet hold, then inform Banquo he will father a line of kings (James was believed to be of that lineage). When the first part of their prediction comes true – Macbeth attains the doomed Thane’s title – the further declaration that he will be King of Scotland sets his mind racing.

In celebration of their victory, King Duncan (Hans Cummings) and his sons Malcolm (Mallory Ward) and Donalbain (Dalton McKinney) go to Macbeth’s castle at Inverness. Lady Macbeth (Leah Hodson), informed of the prophesy, strongly encourages her husband to murder the ruler. Once it’s done (with the king’s guards framed and conveniently dispatched), the sons flee, leaving Macbeth with the crown. However, fellow Thane Macduff (Dillon Richter) suspects the truth and slips away, tragically leaving his wife (Miranda Khoury) vulnerable.

As you likely know, things just get more maddening and tragic from here on out.

The cast also includes Cheyenne Henson (as Banquo’s son, Fleance), Derrick Krober, Bill Baker, Jake Hobbs, Cheri Walker, Elizabeth Ann Fasbinder, and Jean Long.

Excellent performances throughout, especially Hodson’s portrayal of Lady Macbeth, working from power-mad to just plain mad. O’Hara ably employs his distinctive voice to fully express the titular character. From the rush of fate to slowly learning its cost, we sense his growing regret and desperation throughout the scenes that follow him literally taking that fate into his own hands.

The Witches prove their essential place in the play, making this a Halloween treat. Their demeanors flex to reveal subtle power in a scene, then shaken off with a wicked giggle as they glide offstage. The performance of the cauldron dance shows respect for the Old Ways embraced by modern practitioners. And Elm being a musician greatly enhances her portrayal of Hecate; her instruments include one that reveals how a certain familiar spooky sound-effect is made.  

You can’t beat the price, as Garfield Shakespeare Company performances are free. Mud Creek casts a comic spell

As the spooky season closes in on us, we have a fresh production of the witchy stage comedy “Bell, Book and Candle,” by John Van Druten at Mud Creek Players, directed by Dani Lopez-Roque.

Gillian (Heather Jones), a powerful witch living in 1960s New York, is taking a fancy to mortal Shep Henderson (Jamie Kenjorski), a book publisher who lives upstairs. However, upstairs from him is Gillian’s silly Aunt Queenie (Stacy Embry) who has been misbehaving. During a rather eventful Christmas Eve, the witches and Gillian’s stylish warlock brother Nicky (Stephen Greiner) set up a magickal night for Shep, and even summon Sidney Redlich (Lou Cavallari), the non-witch author and witchcraft “expert.”

As any spellcaster will tell you, if you put a lot of energy out there – especially in matters of love –there will be serious circumstances. This charming rom-com even has a subtle nod to a certain sitcom that this play helped inspire.

As typical of shows of the era, all characters have nice outfits, thirst for cocktails, and something clever to say. Jones’ performance gives the perspective of a selfish personality slowly discovering the pain and potential good of empathy. Embry’s Auntie is naturally charming, while Greiner feels too fabulous to change. Kenjorski, though playing the “victim” here, has Shep realize perhaps his choices weren’t entirely his own before he encountered his witchy neighbors. Cavallari is both comic foil and a cautionary lesson on the difference between what we think we understand and what we actually do.

This fun, bewitching show opens Mud Creek’s 75th Anniversary Season, celebrating the company’s past hits – “Bell, Book and Candle” was staged here in 1953, not long after its Broadway debut. Bewitching comedy at Buck Creek

If you had the power to acquire anything you desired, when you get it, is it truly yours? Now, change that to “any-one.”

Buck Creek Players puts a little spooky in Spring with their production of the classic comedy, “Bell Book and Candle,” by John Van Druten. If the story of genuine spellcasting witches living among us looks familiar, the 1950 play (and the 1958 film version) was part of the inspiration for the hit TV sitcom “Bewitched.”

On Christmas Eve in 1950s New York, Gillian Holroyd (Anna Spack), the more powerful and practical of her witchy clan, notices a tenant of her building, Shep Henderson (Josh Rooks), is quite handsome. Upon finding out from silly Aunt Queenie (Nancy Laudeman) that Shep will soon be engaged to a woman Gillian has hated since they were schoolmates, she decides powerful magic to ensnare him will be worth the risk. But first, Gillian’s equally carefree brother Nicky (Ben Jones) and Queenie are there to exchange gifts. His to them are copies of non-witch Sidney Redlitch’s latest book “Magic in Mexico,” so the witches and warlock can mock it. But knowing Shep, a publisher, wants to work with Redlitch (Jeremy Teipen), they use the photo on the book jacket to cast a summoning spell.

With a little help from feline familiar Pyewacket, the magic is set into motion, and love, or something like it, is in the air. Calling off his engagement, Shep seems contented in Gillian’s arms, and he’s poised to work with Redlitch on his book about witches in the Big Apple. However, as anyone familiar (pardon the pun) with witchlore in any medium (sorry, can’t help it) knows that when significant energy goes out, who knows how it will come back.

Suddenly, Shep is confused, overwhelmed, and proposing marriage. Also, it turns out Nicky is helping Redlitch in exchange for drawing illustrations, and that Nicky and Queenie have taken him around the NYC magickal community. For Gillian, who takes her spellwork seriously, and had only wanted Shep for a good time, this could spell – I mean, lead to – disaster! And on top of it all, she’s starting to develop strange new feelings; this could cost her far more than she ever anticipated.

Directed by Mel DeVito, the rom-com that helped bring us Samantha, Sabrina, and arguably the “Charmed” sisters, is truly a bewitching delight.

Rooks, stepping into the shoes of the likes of Rex Harrison and Jimmy Stewart, gives us another example of the likable everyman character he is gaining mastery of. His constantly conflicted soul is plain for all to see, feeling put-upon by outside forces while never entirely yielding his inner strength. Spack is commanding without being bossy, clearly the woman in charge, even when things start to go sideways. Queenie, who only recently embraced her powers, is played by Laudeman as both the “cool aunt” and a little girl enjoying her new toys – which makes her both fun and, in Gillian’s mind, in need of restraint. Jones (who admits to using Paul Lynde as a touchstone) presents Nicky as practically giddy at any chance to wield some powers. A practiced warlock, he only lets Gillian limit him to a degree. Teipen, our other “mortal” in the cast, goes from drunkenly taking it all as a gag (he was summoned from a Christmas party) to soberly seeing he’s in over his depth in genuine occult activity.

Pyewacket is a clever rather life-like animatronic, moving and mewing precisely on cue. Without seeing a special credit for the kitty, I’ll note that props are by DeVito and Suzi Brown. Costumes, an eclectic mix of conservative, wild, and glamorous, as needed, are by Tiffany Wilson. Rich Laudeman is stage manager.
